Anthony Tuckney (1599–1670) was an English Puritan theologian and Cambridge divine. He served successively as Master of Emmanuel College (1645–1653) and Master of St John's College (1653–1660), and held the Regius Professorship of Divinity at Cambridge. A prominent member of the Westminster Assembly, he played a significant role in drafting the Westminster Confession and Catechisms. He is remembered particularly for his correspondence with Benjamin Whichcote, in which he defended Reformed orthodoxy against the latitude of the Cambridge Platonists. His forty sermons, preached over the course of his ministry and published posthumously by his son Jonathan in 1676, represent the breadth of his practical and doctrinal preaching.

The thirty-eighth sermon in Tuckney's collection, the second of two sermons on Matthew 24:45–46 ("Who then is a faithful and wise Servant, whom his Lord hath made Ruler over his Houshold, to give them Meat in due season?"). Tuckney treats this as the "2nd Work" on this text, focusing on the servant's duty of giving food: what the food is (not poison, not airy speculations, but solid nourishing doctrine), how it is to be dispensed to the various members of God's household according to their condition, and the importance of giving it in due season — catching the fittest opportunities of pastoral care. The sermon ends just before the title page of Sermon XXXIX on the same printed page.
