Volume IV of the Quaracchi critical edition of the Opera Omnia of St. Bonaventure (1889), containing his commentary on the fourth book of Peter Lombard's Sentences. Edited by the Friars Minor at the College of St. Bonaventure in Quaracchi (near Florence), this edition remains the standard scholarly text. Book IV treats the sacraments and the four last things.

Distinction 25: On the Conferral of Holy Orders

Distinctio XXV: De dispensatione sacri ordinis

Bonaventure's commentary on Distinction 25 of the fourth book of Peter Lombard's Sentences, which treats the conferral of holy orders. Article 1 asks who can confer orders, working through whether bishops alone hold the power, whether a heretical bishop can validly ordain, whether a simoniac bishop can ordain, and whether the act of ordaining simoniacally itself makes one a heretic. Article 2 examines questions about the recipient of orders. The Dubia at the end of the distinction include the influential Dub. VI on the modes of simony, asking quibus modis contrahitur simonia and unpacking the mnemonic verse Nummus, lingua, timor, caro cum fama populari / Non faciunt gratis spirituale dari — the gift of hand, tongue, fear, flesh, and favor.
