The glossa ordinaria on Causa 1, Question 1 of Gratian's Decretum — the standard medieval commentary on the question whether sacraments and orders conferred by a simoniac are valid, and more broadly whether the simoniacally ordained have any real ecclesiastical standing. The gloss was compiled by Johannes Teutonicus around 1216 and revised by Bartholomaeus Brixiensis around 1245; the text here follows the post-1582 editio Romana corrected under Gregory XIII. Question 1 is the longest of the seven questions in Causa 1 and the heart of the Decretum's treatment of simony, working through whether Simon Magus and Gehazi were truly simoniacs, whether the sin lies in intent or transaction, what counts as a munus (gift) that vitiates an ordination, and whether sacraments conferred by simoniacs convey grace. Each gloss is keyed to a lemma in the central text by a printed superscript letter.
