The Decretalium Collectiones is the second part of Aemilius Friedberg's standard 1879 critical edition of the Corpus Iuris Canonici. It contains five collections: the Decretales Gregorii IX (Liber Extra, compiled by Raymond of Penyafort at Pope Gregory IX's direction, 1234, the central canon law collection of the medieval Western church); the Liber Sextus of Boniface VIII (1298); the Clementinae of Clement V (promulgated 1317); the Extravagantes of John XXII; and the Extravagantes Communes. The main text is set in two columns per page with critical apparatus below, columns numbered sequentially 1–1340. This photomechanical reprint (Graz, 1959) reproduces the 1879 Leipzig (B. Tauchnitz) edition.

On Simony, and That Nothing Should Be Demanded or Promised for Spiritual Things

De Simonia, et Ne Aliquid Pro Spiritualibus Exigatur vel Promittatur

The forty-six canons of Decretales Gregorii IX, Book V, Title III, compiled by Raymond of Penyafort and promulgated by Pope Gregory IX in 1234. This title gathers papal decretals from Gregory I through Gregory IX on simony — the buying and selling of spiritual goods, ordinations, and ecclesiastical offices — and on the broader prohibition against demanding payment for the sacraments, burial, monastic profession, or other sacred acts. The canons address the definition of simony, the penalties for simoniacal ordination and election, and the obligations of bishops, abbots, and other clergy to confer spiritual benefits freely.
