Pamphlets on the Controversy Between Emperors and Popes in the 11th and 12th Centuries, Volume III

The Libelli de Lite Imperatorvm et Pontificvm (Tomus III) is the third volume of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica's critical edition of polemical tracts written during the investiture controversy of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, published in Hannover in 1897. Edited by E. Sackur, E. Dümmler, H. Boehmer, I. Dieterich, and others, it gathers a wide range of polemical writings bearing on the controversy over simony, clerical celibacy, and the conflict between imperial and papal authority. The volume is dominated by the works of Gerhoch of Reichersberg, whose reformist treatises—including the Liber de edificio Dei, De investigatione Antichristi, and his commentaries on the psalms—occupy the majority of the volume (pp. 136–523). Other notable works include Bonizone of Sutri's libelli, Arnulf of Sées' invective against Gerard of Angoulême, the anonymous Tractatus Eboracenses, and smaller pieces by Gualterus ab Insulis, Hugo Metellus, and Marbod of Rennes, along with supplementary materials from earlier volumes.
