A posthumous collection of forty sermons preached by Anthony Tuckney, D.D., Master of Emmanuel and St John's Colleges and Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge. The sermons, expounding texts from Philippians, Second Peter, Proverbs, Isaiah, Luke, the Psalms, Genesis, Matthew, and Philippians again, were published at London in 1676 by his son Jonathan Tuckney, M.A., transcribed faithfully from the author's own manuscript notes. The collection represents Tuckney's characteristic combination of careful exegesis, Reformed doctrine, and practical application to the Christian life.

Sermon XXXVIII on Matthew 24:45–46

The thirty-eighth sermon in Tuckney's collection, the second of two sermons on Matthew 24:45–46 ("Who then is a faithful and wise Servant, whom his Lord hath made Ruler over his Houshold, to give them Meat in due season?"). Tuckney treats this as the "2nd Work" on this text, focusing on the servant's duty of giving food: what the food is (not poison, not airy speculations, but solid nourishing doctrine), how it is to be dispensed to the various members of God's household according to their condition, and the importance of giving it in due season — catching the fittest opportunities of pastoral care. The sermon ends just before the title page of Sermon XXXIX on the same printed page.
